Across the Sungai Kolok, from Thailand to Malaysia
I crossed into Malaysia from Southern Thailand. Narathiwat is a sleepy border town with hardly any tourist. It is also a lovely seaside town with friendly, smiling people. It was enjoyable walking the quiet lanes watching the birdcages and little children playing about. One little girl was teaching another little girl how to do a “wai” — the gentle Thai bow used to greet people. A mom was combing the hair of another little girl. Families, camped out by the sea, were enjoying the relaxed Sunday.
Crossing the Sungai Kolok river (Sungai means river in Malay) into Malaysia. I had a difficult time figuring out the Thai immigration. Eventually, when I found it, it was a nondescript building with a man sitting on what looked like early 1990s computer. The Malaysian side was more built up.
It is so close to Thailand; it is easy to get Thai food here.
